Ellis Construction was selected as the design/build contractor for the Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) Medical Simulation Center, an 11,120-square-foot alteration to the third floor of the Aspirus Riverview Hospital. The former birthing center was transformed into a state-of-the-art simulation center with nine high-tech manikins used for hands-on simulation training for MSTC medical students. The manikins simulate many real-life clinical scenarios. The project included five hospital rooms, four exam rooms, a surgical suite, lab draw room, two large classrooms and much more. Ellis Construction had to take special steps to control dust and noise and control for infection of patients and staff in close proximity to the project. A major challenge emerged when a third floor hot water line was damaged during demolition, causing extensive flood damage. That required significant replacement of materials and an onsite specialized mold remediation contractor.
