The Construction Industry has a Stake in the April 1 Election

ABC of Wisconsin has endorsed two candidates in the April 1 spring election.  Why is a construction association speaking out on the Supreme Court and Department of Public Instruction? Because we believe these races are closely connected to the merit shop contractors in our state.

First, for the Supreme Court: The balance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be decided by the outcome of the April 1 spring election. We know that there are currently four justices on the court who have supported unions, and are likely to strike down Act 10 if they have the opportunity. One candidate, Susan Crawford, would maintain the liberal majority on the court and would support their efforts to overturn Act 10. She also has a record of providing light sentences to criminals. The other candidate, Brad Schimel, is supportive of the merit shop. He also understands the difficulties of contractor theft, and holds offenders accountable. For these reasons, ABC of Wisconsin is endorsing Brad Schimel for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Second, for the State Superintendent: ABC of Wisconsin runs an apprenticeship program. Applicants to the program need to pass reading and math tests, with requirements varying by trade. Apprentices need to be able to read and complete basic math in order to be successful on jobsites. There are two candidates for the State Superintendent position. Jill Underly, the incumbent, has lowered standards for testing in Wisconsin schools, and students’ scores on standardized exams have dropped, too. Brittany Kinser is the other candidate. She is campaigning on raising the standards, and helping students meet and exceed reading and math guidelines. It’s for this reason that ABC of Wisconsin is endorsing Brittany Kinser for State Superintendent.

ABC of Wisconsin represents more than 1,000 companies in our state, and at least 25,000 skilled construction workers. We believe our members have a serious stake in this election, and can make a difference. We encourage everyone to vote on April 1 (or vote early). More information on polling sites and ballots is available here.
