The Centennial Park Mill Pond – North Bulkhead Wall and Park Pavilion project involved replacing a deteriorated pond wall, building a train station themed all-season park pavilion and the installation of 2 new parking lots, an asphalt path and concrete sidewalk. This involved removing 750’ of old timber walls, 15’ in height, that were replaced with a 960 large concrete block retaining wall, each weighing 2,000 lbs. Collaboration with local farmers aided in the harvesting of 8,000 tons of field stone riprap used on the project. This project created many challenges that needed to be overcome. Working with active waterways required close coordination with the upstream dam operator to ensure proper low water levels. Weather and rain events created worksite challenges within the pond as most of the wall work involved working at the bottom of the pond. Another challenge was the contaminated soils that were encountered. An onsite soil tester determined that the entire site needed to be undercut by 2 feet and, in total, we ended up removing 5,084 tons of contaminated material from the site to an approved Wisconsin DNR landfill. Through collaboration, communication, and safety, this project was effectively completed for the owner.
