The ABC of Wisconsin Apprenticeship Scholarship program is possible thanks to generous donors to the ABC of Wisconsin Apprenticeship Trust, including the late Ed Altmann of Altmann Construction, Inc.
“He (Altmann) realized early on that apprentices receive an excellent education with practical hands-on work experience while receiving a salary. He often talked about how employees, who became apprentices, realized a long-term career goal, sometimes at a young age,” said Tammy (Altmann) Meyers, his daughter.
At ABC of Wisconsin, we are dedicated to supporting the next generation of talent in construction. By investing in apprenticeship education, we not only provide individuals with valuable skills and opportunities but also contribute to the growth and innovation of our industry.

When Ed and Lois Altmann founded Altmann Construction Company in 1982, they knew mentorship and training would be key to the future of the construction industry in Wisconsin.
“My parents were firm believers and strong supporters of apprenticeship both statewide and locally. Over 40 years ago, they co-founded the local carpenter apprenticeship program knowing that the apprenticeship program would be a viable and creditable way to develop, educate and train employees into a professional, quality craftsmen,” said Tammy Meyers, their daughter.
The Altmanns’ legacy didn’t end there. After Ed passed in March, his family decided to provide funds to support a scholarship program for ABC of Wisconsin Apprentices.
“He realized early on that apprentices receive an excellent education with practical hands-on work experience while receiving a salary. He often talked about how employees, who became apprentices, realized a long-term career goal, sometimes at a young age,” Meyers said.
The program his family supported will provide ten $1,000 scholarships in 2024 and will continue to award scholarships annually to qualified apprentices in the ABC apprenticeship program.
“Ed was proud that Altmann Construction Co. had multiple trades utilizing the apprenticeship program (carpentry, concrete finishing, and heavy equipment operators). Whether it was promoting the youth apprenticeship program to local high school students and educators or mentoring employees for and during the adult apprenticeship program, he knew that apprenticeship is terrific opportunity for a rewarding lifelong career,” said Meyers.
ABC of Wisconsin is proud to continue Ed Altmann’s legacy, and to partner with our other generous donors to maintain this ongoing scholarship program. Donations towards the program may be made here.
When James (Jim) Edwards began his work as an Electrician with the IBEW. He spent time mastering his skills, and soon became one of Wisconsin’s first Master Electricians.
His work led him to Van Ert electric, where he spent many years. Later, Thomas Electric in Marshfield became available for purchase. Jim jumped on that opportunity to buy it and took pride in owning his own electrical company.
Jim worked with great diligence to grow Thomas Electric from a small, local business, to one of the largest non-union electrical companies in the state.
His strategy included valuing apprenticeships and helping train the next generation of electricians. James served on the State of Wisconsin’s Apprenticeship Board, and he mentored many employees through the ABC-Wisconsin apprenticeship program.
“Dad worked hard to promote and develop the apprenticeship program both in his own business and for all of the ABC members. He was proud of everyone who did the work, completed the program and continued in the field,” said Jill Wittry, his daughter.
His family and friends recognized his dedication to apprenticeship and honored his memory with a donation to the ABC Apprenticeship Trust. They are pleased to know that his legacy will continue with each apprentice who benefits from the scholarship program.
Donations towards the program may be made here.
