Green Circle Trail Head Project, Schmeekle Reserve Visitor Center

The Green Circle Trailhead at UW-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve consisted of the construction of a bathhouse, shelter and expanded parking lot to accommodate heavy use of the nature area. The shelter house and bathhouse have a timber frame roof structure, which was hand built at ground level due to its design and size. Craftsmen were required to lift the heavy roof structure into place while continually re-routing the trails for pedestrian safety. Another construction challenge was the steep slope roof conditions, requiring special equipment to install roof sheeting and cedar shingles while maintaining safe work practices. The bathhouse included a mechanical room to accommodate heating in winter. The entire concrete plaza, with its pie-shaped, multi-color design, took careful planning and layout by Altmann Construction to ensure quality and precise craftsmanship. The stone placed on the 25-foot fireplace and columns was harvested in Wisconsin.
