Bill and Laurie Ryan asked their son, an architect, to design their stunning, modern, contemporary 3,400-square-foot retirement home overlooking the Wisconsin River in Merrimac. It has an earthy feel that blends with the environment. The design depicts a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere to sit back and observe the wildlife on the river. Features include an open floor plan, strong horizontal lines, over-sized casement windows, a prominent fireplace, custom built Amish cabinetry and a wide use of natural materials. The tongue and groove wood ceiling in the main living room harmonizes with the live edge window sills and the sliding barn door. Holtz Builders built the dream home in just four-and-a-half months. With the steep slope and proximity to the river, compliance with DNR regulations was critical and site deliveries were challenging. Availability of materials, cost fluctuations and extended lead time for subcontractors added to the challenges.
