About the Project

The Washington County Humane Society?s 21,500-square-foot, four-phase, addition/renovation project took a pole barn-type facility and turned it into a destination for animal lovers throughout a four-county region. The complex work was done while the facility remained open and included the selective demolition of the existing facility, renovations and the construction of a new one-story addition. Special features of the project included a dog run, classrooms, kitchen, offices, lobby, retail area and storage. Keeping the shelter open and reducing animal stress while doing it was a big challenge and Altius Building Company worked hard to reduce disruption to the neighborhood, businesses and guests. Altius staff even adopted some pets from the facility, and the company held a punch list party for the team and WCHS staff. Despite a number of plan changes by the owner and engineer, the project was delivered without an incident and on budget.
