About the Project

North American Mechanical handled the HVAC for the new 286,000-square-foot Promega R&D Building in Fitchburg. It included a 13,000-square-foot expansion to the Central Utility Plant that supplies hot and chilled water to the campus. The unique shape of the building provided challenges to the layout of the in-slab radiant piping system. NAMI used CAD/BIM services to avoid conflicts in the field and used Trimble to position the piping system with minimal walls installed. The R&D building included a snow melt system at the entrance, a chilled beam air supply system and six air handling units totaling 216,000 CFM. The Central Utility Plant included three vertical split case pumps at 150 HP each for the chilled water distribution, two additional chillers and 512 VAV boxes for control of supply and exhaust airflows. Despite several obstacles, including the need to relocate 56 geothermal wells at a depth of 450 feet, the project was completed safety on schedule.
