What
You Can Do.
Don't
let PLAs harm projects in your area.
Be
alert for possible union-only agreements. The sooner you know
about a proposed union-only project, the more time you will
have to make an impact. To do this, it helps to have contacts
with and actively network with contracting officers in your
area at all levels of government. In addition, many projects
are publicized well in advance of being bid, and give you an
opportunity to find out about requirements, such as proposed
union-only agreements.
Be
sure to maintain contact with elected and regulatory officials
in the federal, state, and local levels. Let them know about
the disadvantages of union-only agreements, and make sure you
have early warnings of union-only demands and proposals. Click
here to contact your local legislators.
Also,
below you'll find sample letters about project labor agreements
that you may use to send to your legislators as well as examples
of Editorials and Letters to the Editor that you may use to
send to your local media.
Establish
contacts with like-minded business associations and public
interest groups, and make them aware of union-only agreements.
Becoming involved with ABC is an excellent first step.
Establish
media contacts on labor issues. Find journalists who are objective
or partial to open competition. Sending Editorials or Letters
to the Editor is a great way to express concern over a PLA
and make people aware of the issue. For construction media
